This classic tells the love story between a prince in disguise as a hideous beast and the intelligent and beautiful Belle. Rich in the tones of finding acceptance where judgment is cruel and learning to understand the misunderstood, Beauty and the Beast opens with the casting of the Prince’s spell after his dismissal of a lovely and deceitful Enchantress. After her father is taken captive by the Beast, Belle vows to be his substitute. However, this is not overlooked by Belle’s overconfident suitor, Gaston.
While she spends her days at his castle, Belle gets to know the personalities who reside here: Lumiere, a charmingly handsome candelabra; Cogsworth, a tightly-wound mantel clock; Mrs. Potts, a sweetly maternal teapot; Babette, a flirtatious feather duster; and Madame de la Grande Bouche, a former opera singer-turned wardrobe. The objects are hopeful for a break in the spell when they see a change in Belle’s affections toward the Beast.
Once Gaston catches wind of Belle’s whereabouts, he and his goofy sidekick, LeFou, hire Monsieur D’arque, the slimy, calculating proprietor of the local lunatic asylum. Gaston, angry at the thought of Belle’s feelings for the Beast, leads a charge of townsfolk to destroy him. Gaston fatally wounds the Beast, and thinking he has died, Belle professes her love for him amidst her tears, breaking the spell and freeing all objects and the Beast.
