The Cambridge-Isanti Bluejacket football team has been off to a strong start, despite losing two straight games.
The boys traveled to Monticello on Sept. 22 for a North Central Blue matchup. The Bluejackets and Magic were tied at 14 heading into halftime, looking like either team could take the game with a few big plays.
Junior Blake Cannon was effective in the red zone for the Bluejackets taking two carries into the endzone for the teams first half points.
In the second half, it was senior Jett Gaudette scoring from five out to give C-I the lead. The game ended in heartbreaking fashion; however, as the Magic scored with 2:15 left in the game. The two-minute offense was not able to move the ball, and the Bluejackets were sent home with a narrow 21-20 loss. A blocked extra point made all the difference in this one.
Up next for the Bluejackets will be their 2017 homecoming game against the Andover Huskies. After dropping their first game, the reigning section 7AAAAA champs have been on a roll with three straight wins. The high powered Huskies offense has not scored under 30 points since week one.
The Bluejackets defense will be tested early and often. If they can make a few key stops, the Bluejacket offense can keep them in the game. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. at CIHS.
Northcentral Blue Standings: Elk River, 3-0; Andover, 3-0; Rogers, 2-1; Monticello, 1-2; St. Francis, 1-2; Buffalo, 1-2; Cambridge-Isanti, 1-2; Chisago Lakes, 0-3.
