Since I wrote about Thanksgiving last week, I thought I would enlighten you about the day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday. This day was probably coined by someone in retail sales.
Black Friday is one of the two busiest shopping days of the year—the other being the day after Christmas when shoppers are exchanging merchandise or using their gift certificates. Why “Black”? Well, red means a loss and black means a profit in the financial world. Retailers are often losing money until holiday sales begin, which is the day after Thanksgiving. Black Friday represents the turning point from a loss toward big profits.
In the past, numerous stores opened on Thanksgiving Day, but this year many shopkeepers are honoring the American tradition of closing their stores on this holiday. This shows regard for their customers and employees, who can spend the holiday with their family. Thanksgiving is a day for family to get together and enjoy a family meal with turkey and all the trimmings.
Many retailers are encouraging their customers that still want to shop on Thanksgiving to buy merchandise online, then pick up the items from the store on the weekend. But, since so many stores are closed on Thursday, Black Friday will probably be a busier shopping day than ever. I hope you enjoy Black Friday as much as the retailers do. It is something to look forward to besides leftover turkey and pumpkin pie.
