All are welcome to join the Friends of the Rum River in its 11th annual “Fun in the Rain or Sun Cleaning up the Rum” event. This year they will be joining the cities of Isanti and Cambridge as one of the “Two Cities – One Community” events. The cleaning up the Rum River event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.

Each year Friends of the Rum River targets cleaning a different stretch of the 150-mile long Rum River. On Saturday, Sept. 10, rendezvous at the boat launch of Cambridge City Park, launching by 9:30 a.m. They will head downriver for nine miles, pulling out at Martin’s Landing (DNR), just south of the city of Isanti, east side of the river off of County Road 23-Whiskey Road.

Participants are assigned a one-to-two mile section of the river to pick up, and then are free to paddle at leisure to the take-out. Items frequently found are pop and beer cans, fishing bobbers, and many, many tires. Other noteworthy items that have been found on this “junk hunt” included a swivel chair, two rusted out snowmobiles, a riding lawnmower, a truck topper, a creamery jug and Mary Poppin’s umbrella.

This is a lovely, interesting stretch of water, very easy, great for families. Bring your own canoe, kayak, or other water-worthy devise, including paddles and life jackets. Protective gloves and garbage bags, provided by the MN Department of Natural Resources, will be available at the boat launch site. Free bottles of water and snacks, donated by area businesses, will also be available as you put in, but do pack a lunch. Children aged 12 and under should be accompanied by an adult. Country Camping will again provide free shuttle for people and water crafts from start to finish and back.

RSVP if possible, but by all means show up. Groups are welcome. As well as shuttle service, Country Camping of Isanti will be donating use of canoes and kayaks to the event on a first-come first-serve basis.

Contact Wally at 763-689-9619, Ralph at 763-689-0812 or Kriste at RumRiverNews@yahoo.com if you need a canoe partner, wish to reserve a canoe or have questions.
