On Thursday, March 17, we will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. This is both a religious and cultural celebration honoring Ireland’s patron St. Patrick.
March 17 is the day of the saint’s death. In Ireland, people wear green attire, attend parades and festivals and worship at church services. Irish food and drinks are served in the pubs. Symbols of St. Patrick’s Day include shamrocks, Irish beer, leprechauns, pots of gold and anything green.
How many of you know the history behind this day? If you do, then you are probably a full-blooded Irishman. St. Patrick was born in Roman Britain in the fourth century to a wealthy family. At age 16, he was kidnapped. He became a slave in Gaelic Ireland, where he worked as a shepherd and “found God.” Eventually he became a priest and returned to Ireland to spread Christianity. He died on March 17, and became Ireland’s prominent saint.
We are celebrating this Irish-American holiday by serving a delicious home-cooked lunch on March 17 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The menu includes corned beef and cabbage, boiled potatoes, shamrock dessert and leprechaun punch. There will also be an Irish trivia contest during this timeframe with prizes for the people with the highest scores. So, put on your green attire and come celebrate with us. You don’t need to be Irish … All nationalities are welcome. We promise it will be a festive event with good food, good friends, smiles and excitement.
