A fresh face in local business has the former gas station and convenience store located at Westrom’s Corner in Cambridge back in action. Chicago native Scott Frayn has made a trip north to Cambridge to try his hand in owning a business.

With a background as a financial analyst and real estate appraiser, specifically appraising gas stations, Frayn is bringing some new twists to the newly renovated BP Amoco gas station located at the corner of South Main Street and Highway 65. It has been challenging, but with the help of his general manager, Shanae Peterson, they are almost ready for their grand opening.

The store is Frayn’s first business adventure, and he said that is exactly what it has been: an adventure.

“This has been the wildest ride in my life, but very fun,” he said.

The journey has been challenging, but according to Peterson, it is worth every second.

“Working with Scott has been the greatest experience,” Peterson said. “We’ve both helped each other grow.”

The new gas station and convenience store is currently open, with the public invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. March 18. The event will feature specials on various items in the store, free giveaway items and prizes. The store’s grand opening will feature other select deals and run until March 31.

Citing the great location, Frayn has big plans for the new store. With the size of his lot, he plans on making the gas station into a local truck stop. Also with a new identity comes the need for some new amenities, such as Caribou Coffee, Herman’s Bakery products, live bait and convenience items. The site also features a touchless car wash.

Frayn hopes to change how people shop in his store.

“When I got here, the store was cluttered; I want to have more of an open layout,” he added. “I want to have the highest quality products.”

With the support he and Peterson have received from the city and county, they want to make the store something the local community can be proud of.

“It is so refreshing to receive very direct help,” he said. “The city of Cambridge has been so receptive and the people have been understanding.”

Currently Frayn is looking for an established vendor to open a restaurant in the adjoining store space. With his goal to make the corner a truck stop destination, a restaurant would be right at home.

The gas station and convenience store is located at 4000 S. Main St., Cambridge, and can be reached at 763-689-4737.
