Dear Editor:

In recent weeks there have been a number of crashes on Isanti County roadways. This is definitely a negative trend. The crashes are happening all over, not just one area. Some of the injuries have been serious or fatal. But the good news is that there are things we can all do to improve this situation.

First, we need to Pay Attention when driving. Don’t drive distracted. Put down all distractions like the cell phone and food. Second, Buckle Up. We know seat belts save lives. Use the belt and make sure all passengers are properly restrained. It is especially important for young children to be in the proper seat.

Third, Drive Sober. Drunk driving is still an issue on our roadways in Minnesota. Each year more than 25,000 persons are arrested for drunk-impaired driving. We are fortunate in Isanti County to have a Safe Cab program that will get you home safely. You do not need to take the chance and do not let others drive impaired. During December there is a Holiday “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” law enforcement wave in which extra officers are on the roads to stop impaired drivers. Be smart and use Safe Cab or a designated driver. Finally, drive the speed limit. Speed continues to be major factor in some crashes. Slow down and get to your destination safely.

Please pledge to drive safely without distractions, commit to obeying the speed limit, not drive drunk, drowsy or impaired, and make sure all are buckled up.

Winter can be a dangerous time on our roads. Let’s work together to make Isanti County roads the safest in Minnesota.
