A new attorney specializing in estate planning, business law and tax law has joined McKinnis & Doom in Cambridge.
David Kula joined the firm Nov. 2. Kula, a graduate of Totino-Grace High School, received his bachelor’s degree in political science and international studies in 2012 from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. He received his law degree from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul and graduated magna cum laude in 2015.
Kula previously worked for McKinnis & Doom as a law clerk beginning in September 2014 while attending his third year of law school.
“While I was in college, I always had pre-law in the back of my mind as I was trying to find an interest area for a job after college,” Kula said. “During my senior year of college I decided I would enter law school because it seemed like it coincided with my skills and would be a good fit for me.”
Kula is grateful to McKinnis & Doom for providing him with experience while still in law school.
“I saw the job posting for a law clerk for McKinnis & Doom through our school website, and so I applied for it,” Kula said. “It was an opportunity for real-world experience. Law school is great and the professors there are really helpful, but working with Sherwood McKinnis was wonderful and I learned so much from him.”
While serving as a law clerk, Kula worked on a variety of projects, helped with litigation, files and research, did research and writing and got involved with certain cases.
“I basically filled in wherever I was needed,” Kula said.
Kula said all the attorneys at the firm, including McKinnis, Carrie Doom and Jacob Peterson, have been wonderful to work with.
“Everyone has been very helpful, introducing me to people and showing me around the area,” Kula said. “Everyone I have met so far has been very friendly and I look forward to continuing to meet more members of the community.”
Kula’s areas of practice include business law, estate planning, probate and trust administration, tax planning and tax return preparation.
“I love helping people and finding solutions to their problems or issues or help them plan for their future,” Kula said. “It gives me reassurance knowing our clients have a peace of mind regarding their personal or professional affairs.
