Active Aging Week is a campaign initiated in 2003 by the International Council on Active Aging. It is a weeklong campaign which celebrates the positivity of aging today. Active Aging Week is held to show that, regardless of age or health conditions, older adults can live as fully as possible in all areas of life–physical, social, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, vocational and environmental. This year, Active Aging Week will be observed from Sept. 24-30, and its theme is “Ignite Your Passion.”
What exactly is active aging? Active aging is the process of optimizing opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age. It applies to both individuals and population groups. The word “active” refers to continuing participation in social, economic, cultural, spiritual and civic affairs, not just the ability to be physically active or to participate in the labor force. Older people who retire can remain active contributors to their families and communities. The goal of active aging is to extend healthy life expectancy and quality of life for people as they age.
Active Aging Week is just another reminder to all of us how important it is to stay active and healthy. Health at older ages concerns everyone. Continue to challenge yourself to be the best you can be and take care of yourself. At SAC’s Enrichment Center, we are always taking steps to promote a happy and healthy aging society. Our environment is age-friendly and we encourage everyone to stop in anytime to visit us, whether it be for breakfast, lunch or a social activity, such as card playing, bunco, wellness walking, or one of our many other activities. Come and pick up one of our calendars or request to be put on our newsletter list so you know what activities are going on at SAC’s Enrichment Center. If you have not been very active before, it is never too late to “Ignite your Passion.”

The day that JFK was assassinated in Dallas, Lyndon Baynes Johnson (LBJ) became the 37th President of the United States. The country was in shock and yet the business of the nation continued. The top priority was the Civil Rights Act, ad in Tony Award-winning Broadway play, LBJ, Martin Luther King and Minnesota’s Humbert H. Humphrey take on a Congress divided on this hot button matter of policy. This was a turbulent time in our history. Churches were being bombed by members of the KKK, Freedom Riders disappeared into the night, George Wallace held a tight grip on Alabama, Bobby Kennedy posed a challenge to LBJ in the coming election and tensions ran high from coast to coast. Cost: Play $25, Transportation $15, Tour Free, Lunch at Mears Park, surrounded by Lunch Trunks. We will leave at 8:45 a.m. from Center. We have three seats left.
• Sorry for the mess in the Activity Center. October 9 hopefully will be the end of the construction.
