A passion for preserving foods, cooking, and photography are the motivations behind the new cookbook, Savory Sweet: simple preserves from a northern kitchen, written by Beth Dooley and Mette Nielsen.
Within the pages are tips and tricks on how to preserve foods for the 21st century for both first time preservers as well as more seasoned preservers.
Nielsen will be signing copies of Savory Sweet on Saturday, Sept. 30 at Scout and Morgan Books in Cambridge from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. during City Center Market’s Fall Fest, and will have with her a special Danish guest who will be providing samples of some of the recipes from the book.
“While all the old methods are still valid for some people, I felt there needed to be new ways for a new way of living, for smaller families, often living in smaller spaces without access to growing their own foods and ways of storing it,” Nielsen said.
The focus of the book is to get more families to use organic produce when at all possible, but to also use frozen fruits as well as dried fruits in the winter months.
“We really encourage people to think about preserving as a year round way to preserve local, in season produce,” Nielsen said.
As more of a savory person than a sweet person, Nielsen is particularly found of the garlic recipes throughout the book, and although she didn’t grow up with much exposure to the herb it is now something she loves to grow and eat. Most of the inspiration for the recipes that her and Dooley share come from Nielsen’s Nordic background and her many travels throughout the world.
