So what is a poetry slam? The arts represent an outlet of expression that is usually influenced by culture in society and which in turn helps to change culture.
Art and Science Academy students recently held the school’s first “poetry slam” for peers, parents and judges. Students performed by reciting poetry they created and then received scores from student peers who judged each performance using a pre-determined set of criteria. Parents and family watched the performances in a “café” style setting while enjoying snacks, coffee and lemon-aid provided by the language arts department.
Literary art is one form of artistic expression that students attending Art and Science Academy learn about. Students who are attracted to this form of art tend to enjoy language, words, reading and written expression.
“The skills sets that students learn as they engage in these types of activities are not immediately evident,” said school founder Carlo Galeazzi, but they are critical to success in the 21st century workplace. These skills include advanced vocabulary, speaking and writing fluently and confidently, and self-confidence which comes from performing for others. Our students learn to receive and give constructive criticism in a healthy and respectful manner. They learn to take risks and step out of their comfort zone in an environment that is supportive and constructive.”
