Cambridge-Isanti boys track and field has been off to a hot start. On April 21, the boys hosted the Norm Ayen Invite at Cambridge-Isanti High School.
Not only did the boys win their home meet, but they did so in blowout fashion with a team score of 190. Second-place Cloquet scored 116.5, while no other team broke triple digits.
The meet was full of top of the line performances, including sophomore Luke Malamisuro’s personal best triple jump at 40 feet nine inches.
Head coach Kent Viesselman was proud of how well his team preformed, citing the depth of this year’s current roster.
“I was really happy with our relays and our field events specifically. It looks like we will be a very deep team,” he said.
The boys took first-place in the 4×400 meter relay and the 4×100. They almost completed a relay sweep, but were held to second-place in both the 4×800 and 4×200.
Their next meet will be back at CIHS on April 27 when they host their True Team Invite. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
Cambridge - Isanti Girls Track
Coming off of a big win at the Chisago Lakes Triangular on April 18, the girls were ready to go for the Norm
Ayen invite.
Head coach Mike Galligan had plenty to say in regard to his young team.
“It’s been a very exciting early season watching the coaching staff diligently working to identify and develop the talent and skills of a young team, and seeing the athletes stepping up to work hard, take risks, and do whatever the team needs of them,” he said. “Strong performers on the track included distance runner senior Abberly Smith who won the 800 meter run with a commanding performance, building a bigger lead throughout the race and sophomore Jess Illg who took third in a 400 meter dash field that was separated by two-thirds of a second for second- through sixth-place. In the sprints, freshman Briahna Murray took fifth in the 100 meter dash and freshman Chloe Nelson took third in the 200 meter dash just off second-place by a hundredth of a second. Hurdlers freshman Anna Grace Nelson, freshman Brooklyn Terwilliger and sophomore Jovannah Carlson have all been scoring for us as well.”
The girls took home the top spot in the 4×200 meter relay, and finished third in the 4×100, 4×400 and 4×800. Sophomore Shelby Orr found herself competing in three relays in one meet, as she took on the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400.
The girls next meet will also be April 27 during the True Team Invite at CIHS.
