One Republican fewer is running for Congress in the 6th Congressional District.

Sen. John Pederson, of St. Cloud, has dropped out of the scramble to replace Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann.

In a statement, Pederson said he could not balance the priorities in his life and continue as a candidate.

“Because of this conflict, I have decided to withdraw my name from the race,” he said.

Pederson described his withdrawal as a personal choice, not reflective of support for his campaign.

One former challenger, former Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Delano, a failed 2010 Republican gubernatorial candidate, was quick to praise Pederson.

“The St. Cloud region has a history of strong leadership and public service from their elected officials and John is no exception,” Emmer said.

Emmer is one of three remaining Republicans competing to replace Bachmann, who chose not to seek another term. Anoka County Board Chairwoman Rhonda Sivarajah and former Rep. Phil Krinkie, of Shoreview, round out the Republican trio.

Democrats vying in the district are environmentalist Judy Adams, of Circle Pines, and Jim Read, a professor at the College of St. Benedict. Sartell City Mayor Joe Perske has indicated his intention to run as a Democratic candidate in the race but has not formally declared.

Bachmann has represented the 6th District since 2006.
