SPORTS ROUND-UP:   Cambridge-Isanti boys basketball took control with a solid second half to open the 2014 season with a 69-55 win over host St. Louis Park on Saturday.

Returning point guard Kyle McDonald scored 14 of his game-high 25 points in the first half to help keep the Bluejackets ahead 31-29 at the break. The C-I boys then went on an 11-0 run early in the second half with two buckets by Jake Johnson, a Matt Swanson jumper, two Garrett Hiljus free throws and a McDonald three-pointer to create a 42-31 lead.

The Orioles worked back to within 51-47 when the Bluejackets went on a 7-0 burst to get back ahead by 11 with 3:24 to play. Devin Malik and Hiljus hit field goals, and Nate Cox knocked down a ‘3’ in that stretch. Cox, Hunter Vavra and Swanson finished the Jackets’ scoring with layups in the final minute to keep the Orioles at bay.

McDonald finished with 5 assists to go with this 25 points. Aditional balanced point totals for C-I came from Malik (9), Swanson (9), Johnson (8), Cox (7) and Hiljus (6). Collin Terwilliger, McDonald, Cox and Hiljus all finished with 3 steals in the victory, and Swanson led with 12 rebounds.

The Bluejackets took on White Bear Lake in their Nov. 26 home-opener. Their next action will be at home Dec. 5 against section partner Forest Lake.
