September is World Alzheimer’s Month. It was launched in 2012 in an effort to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and to make a difference in the lives of those touched by the disease. The goal of World Alzheimer’s Month is to provide an opportunity for Alzheimer’s Associations around the world to be recognized for all the work they do.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. Common signs include memory loss, communication problems, and unpredictable behaviors. Approximately 46.8 million people worldwide were living with dementia in 2015, and this number is expected to double within the next 20 years. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 5 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease.

The theme of the 2016 World Alzheimer’s Month is “Remember Me.” During this time, everyone is encouraged to learn more about the signs of Alzheimer’s disease, what it means to live with Alzheimer’s, and how to provide care for a loved one.

If you or one of your loved ones was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, you should seek support from medical professionals, as well as family and friends. Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of the aging process—it needs to be treated. So, since September is World Alzheimer’s Month, it is a good time to reflect on the impact of dementia and raise awareness of this terrible disease.
