Elena Bayerl, 19, of rural Isanti, remains in critical, but stable condition after being hit by a train south of Isanti on Wednesday afternoon.

Isanti County Chief Deputy Chris Caulk said the Isanti County Communications Center received a call that a person was hit by a northbound Burlington Northern Sante Fe train at 3:35 p.m. on May 1.

Bayerl was walking along the railroad tracks in the area of South Passage and north of 273rd Avenue NE, just south of Isanti. She was accompanied by two males who were walking with her.

Bayerl was walking along the west side, and outside of the tracks, and all three of them were walking northbound. The two males noticed the train and started to yell at Bayerl but she did not hear them or the train whistle as she was wearing ear buds and listening to music. The male parties also tried to run up and grab her but were too late.

Bayerl was located lying on the west side of the tracks. She was conscious, and airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center.

“It is extremely dangerous to walk on the railroad tracks, and it is also trespassing so it makes it illegal as well,” Caulk said. “Always cross the railroad tracks at controlled intersections.”

The train came to a stop and the railroad crew cooperated with the investigation. The case remains under investigation by the Isanti County Sheriff’s Department and the Burlington Northern Sante Fe Police Department.

Assisting at the scene were the Isanti County Sheriff’s Department, Isanti County Safety and Rescue, Isanti Fire District, Isanti Police Department, Allina Transportation, North Memorial Air Care and a BNSF special agent from their enforcement division.
