Diabetes can mean double trouble for your feet. First, diabetes can reduce blood flow to your feet, depriving them of oxygen and nutrients. This makes it difficult for cuts and sores to heal. Second, peripheral neuropathy can cause your feet to become numb. When this occurs, you cannot feel cuts and sores, so you have a greater chance of infection.

It’s very important that diabetics have shoes that fit well. The rubbing of a misfit shoe can cause a blister, turning into an infected sore that will not heal. So, shoes that fit well are a very important investment.

Because of the importance of good shoes for diabetics, SAC’s Enrichment Center is hosting an educational seminar on diabetic shoes on Wednesday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to noon. Mary Schantzen from Forest Lake/Pine City Medical Supply will be presenting information on this topic. She has experience fitting diabetic shoes and providing custom inserts to go along with them. Mary will explain how to get diabetic shoes with custom molded inserts or heat moldable inserts from Dr. Comfort, Drew, or Ortho feet with little or no cost to you.

Coffee and treats will be provided by SAC’s. Bring your insurance information so that Forest Lake/Pine City Medical Supply can check your eligibility, fax your physician for a prescription, and deliver your diabetic shoes. Diabetic shoes can help you prevent foot problems. Your feet will thank you.
