Father’s Day became a national holiday in 1972, 58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day official. It is always celebrated on the third Sunday of June, hence this year it is on June 19. This isn’t just a day for dad to get more ties. It’s a day to honor dads, grandfathers, step-dads, and all men who act as father figures. Father’s Day is an annual holiday where Americans celebrate the men who made them.

Many of us no longer have a father to celebrate with.  Yet, it is a day to reflect on the important role our fathers have played in our lives. To commemorate him, maybe take time to do something your father would have done in his own spare time. For my dad, it was sitting in a boat on a quiet, peaceful lake patiently trying to catch his limit of walleyes.

Whether they are still present in our lives or not, we should value the lessons our fathers taught us. I am a more gracious and humble person today because I value the lessons I learned from my father. When I need to make an important life decision, I often think, “What would my dad have done? How would he have handled this situation?”

So, whether your father is still present in your life or not, do something to commemorate him this Father’s Day, June 19. He deserves to be loved and remembered as the real, amazing person that he is or was.
