Mother’s Day 2016 has come and gone. It is the day that we honored the mother of our family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. Hopefully you spent the day doing something sweet for a mother, or in memory of your mother, or for someone who needs a little unconditional mother-love.

The origin of Mother’s Day dates back to 1870 when Julia Ward Howe, an abolitionist, established a Mother’s Peace Day to celebrate the eradication of war. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it a national holiday and a “public expression of our love and reverence for all mothers.” Today’s celebrations with flowers, candy, gift certificates, and elaborate meals bear little resemblance to Howe’s original idea.

Mother’s Day is a complex holiday for many women—a reminder of the child they lost, the mother who passed away, the estranged child, or those who are childless. So, as you celebrated this special day, I hope you did not forget these people and were sensitive to their needs.
