When you are trying to raise a family, it’s hard to find time for things like managing your finances. Many families within Spirit River Community have mentioned this is something they need help with, and Pastor Jim Crecelius answered.

As part of their family services program, Spirit River Community in Isanti will be offering family financial planning classes. Starting May 11, weekly classes, open to the public, will be held on Wednesdays at the Spirit River Community Center from 7-8:30 p.m.

These classes will be taught by Gail Peavey, who has served as a family-living educator with the University of Wisconsin Extension Family Financial Security Team from Polk County, Wisconsin, for the past 19 years.

The classes will be geared toward families who are in need of financial planning help.

After several families approached Crecelius requesting a class for this, he could not say no.

“It helps us meet the needs of our community,” he said. “Families kept bringing it up that it’s something that they wish they knew more about.”

The purpose of the courses will be to help families manage their finances and have a better understanding of how to do so in an efficient way.

Peavey will share her knowledge to teach people about financial management. According to Peavey, the goal is all about stability.

“I believe that helping people improve their household financial management capability will enhance their personal financial security and ultimately benefit communities by boosting economic stability,” she said.

By teaching these classes, Peavey is aiming to teach families the importance of money management skills.

Peavey hopes her students are able to take these skills and apply them to everyday life to improve their financial future.

“Money management skills, such as how to create and maintain a budget-spending plan, should be a basic tool that will guide participants to make smart decisions about their financial future,” she shared.

According to Crecelius, there will be an added incentive for those who participate.

While the final details are being worked out, Spirit River has partnered with Minnco Credit Union that will allow students to receive help setting up accounts with Minnco upon completion.
