The Cambridge-Isanti girls christened the new fall sports season with victories over Hermantown and Rocori on Aug. 19 at St. Francis.
The Bluejackets began with a 7-0 victory over the Hawks. Taking their singles matches were Jade Newman (6-1, 6-1), Kate Hanson (6-1, 6-2), Nikki Hallstrom (6-0, 6-0) and Karly Kirkhoff (6-0, 6-1). Posting doubles victories were Ellie Osborne & Lizzie Holm (3-6, 6-3, 10-8), Jade Lamb & Emily Baker (6-4, 6-1), and Tori Kosel & Emily Logan (6-1, 6-2).
Next up was a 6-1 win over the Spartans. C-I again swept the singles matches by Newman (6-1, 6-0), Hanson (6-0, 6-2), Hallstrom (6-0, 6-1) and Kirkhoff (6-2, 6-3). Working for tough wins at doubles were Lamb & Baker (7-5, 6-2) and Kosel & Logan (6-3, 6-2).
“Everyone on the team played well today. It was nice to face Hermantown since they are in our section,” commented C-I Coach Lee Orvik. “I liked what I saw from our girls against a strong Rocori squad. We have plenty of room for improvement, but we kicked the season opener off right.”
